Was your data compromised in the latest data breaches? How to know if you’ve been hacked? Here are the answers.

The online world is becoming scarier each day and the possibility of getting hacked gets increased each time you sign into your online accounts. It’s possible that you haven’t been hacked yet, but you must ensure to follow secure practices to remain safe in the future.

News of new data breaches and password thefts are as common as any other development around you. These attacks occur via various means- either through a malicious email, or a flaw in your computer’s operating system. Even the White House and Pentagon aren’t immune to hackers.

There have been about 5,593 data breaches since the year 2005 and this number is rising exponentially. These breaches have exposed about 800.3 million individual records alone in the United States.

These data breaches are a big risk that ask you to be prepared and follow secure practices.

The Identity Theft Resource Center defines data breach as an “incident in which an individual name plus a Social Security number, driver’s license number, medical record or financial record (credit/debit cards included) is potentially put at risk because of exposure.”

So, what do I lose in a data breach?

Usually, it’s just your basic information like name and email addresses. By collecting this basic information and connecting the dots, an expert hacker can gain tons of other sensitive information to hurt you in various ways.

As written in the Forrester report, Planning for Failure, “even enterprises with the most mature security organizations and advanced security controls can’t prevent every single breach — especially if your opponent has the time and financial backing to target you.”

The situation is getting worse with time and keeping your data safe from the reach of the prying eyes must be your top priority.

But, how to know if you’ve been hacked?

With the increase in hacking attacks, a number of sites have opened up that give you alerts when data breaches take place. One of the best places to get these announcements is the mailing hosted at the Identity Theft Resource Center. It sends regular emails with the weekly data breach information in your inbox.

Haveibeenpwned.com is another website that allows you to check if hackers have compromised your personal information. The website also tells you the reason and incident when your email address was breached.

Another website called Was Company Hacked? performs a Twitter-based search to tell you if there’s any activity on Twitterverse about attacks on the company.

PwnedList and Shouldichangemypassword.com offer a similar service that notify users with email if an email address in compromised.

You are also advised to keep your antivirus updated and scan your system using a good antimalware scan. Your irregular financial statement could be another hint that your data is compromised.

1. There's loads of stuff for touch, but it's different stuff

Designed to appeal to experts and novices alike, Microsoft was at pains to point out that it hasn't given up on touch with the new OS. The Charms bar remains for the moment although we expect it to die if you're using a non-touch PC (check out Continum below).

Microsoft says it wants to support touch users who have persevered with Windows 8 and "evolve" the touch UI. (Translated: That means it is changing quite a bit.) The task switching will no longer work on the left. So with that and the charms going, that's goodbye to most of the problem with Windows 8 - and a whole philosophy down the pan.

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said at the preview: "We want Windows 7 users to feel like they upgraded from a [Toyota] Prius to a Tesla, but they don't need to learn a new way to drive."

2. It's BACK!

As we've covered before, the most noticeable change is the new Start Menu, which looks somewhat like the old start menu. It brings some features from the Windows 8.1 Start Screen, such as live tiles, and can be resized.

3. Another new Task View (the Windows 8 flippy thing has gone)

Now the Windows 8 task switcher has been unceremoniously dumped, there's a new Task View in Windows 10, too, so users can switch between virtual desktops.That's because Microsoft now recognises that novice users use the taskbar rather than switching in other, cleverer, ways such as Alt+Tab (which also now switches between desktops).

A new Snap Assist feature also helps users work out which way is best to snap apps to. You can snap windows into new screens and tile Windows - just as you've been able to since Windows 2.0 or maybe 3.0.

5. The Command Prompt enters the 21st Century

Another quite amazing feature for those of us that use it is that the command prompt is now getting keyboard shortcuts! So you will be able to paste in your commands! Hardly groundbreaking, but actually pretty exciting.

6. Improvements to Windows Explorer

A new Home location is the new default view in Windows Explorer. There's also a Share button on the Windows Explorer taskbar (we really hope this is in the context menu, too).

7. Continuum - the special one

This is the best new thing we found out today. Continuum is an on-the-fly mode for 2 in 1 devices that can automatically change mode if it detects there is suddenly no keyboard attached. So, for example, a back button appears to help you navigate the Desktop with a touch if the keyboard is removed. We reckon the charms will also disappear in non-touch mode although we've heard conflicting news about that.

8. Windows 10 Universal apps

Windows 10 will also usher in a new app model - Universal Windows apps. Windows Universal apps are the new name for Metro apps/Modern apps/Windows Store apps. Take your pick on those old monikers, they've got a new one! Presumably (although we don't know as yet) that these will also work on Windows Phone. Windows 10 will be able to run on all devices from phones to servers and there will be a single app store across the lot.

All older Windows Store apps will work with Windows 10.

9. Modern (sorry, Universal) apps now float on the Desktop

The new Universal apps also work on the desktop and 'float' in their own Windows. Microsoft wants to banish the separation between the Modern UI and the Desktop.

These 'modern' apps on the desktop have a ... icon for more options - replacing the commands that used to be in the charms on the right-hand side of the screen.

10. Windows 10 has lots for Business and Enterprise

Microsoft says it hopes to appeal to business with this release of Windows, more so than Windows 8 ever did. Belfiore said they were "starting the dialogue with businesses today".

To be honest, it needs to - Windows XP is now ancient and unsupported while precious other businesses want to make the leap away from Windows 7. But part of the reason why Microsoft is demonstrating the OS without all the consumer features is to show enterprises what the OS is capable of at this stage.

This version of Windows will have plenty of other features for enterprise, including a customised store and protection for corporate data. Mobile Device Management will be able to be used for all devices.

Google Is Killing The Chrome OS

 Google has decided to kill its Chrome OS that is used to power the Chromebooks. All the good parts of the OS will now be bundled into Android to form a better and more efficient OS.

Google is killing the Chrome OS being used in the Chromebooks and other personal computers, taking all its good parts, and putting it into the Android mobile, according to the Wall Street Journal.

As the report suggests, from the year 2017, Google will have Android as the only operating system for mobile devices, as well as the computers. Citing its sources, WSJ writes that the early version of the newer and advanced Android OS will be previewed early next year, probably at Google I/O.

For those who don’t know, Chrome OS is the operating system used by Google to power the Chromebook line of laptops. These are the low-storage machines that are dependent on the cloud for most functions.

But, Why is Google killing the Chrome OS anyway?

“Google’s new version of Android will also run PCs, giving users access to Google’s Play store, which offers more than one million apps,” WSJ reports.

“Google wants to get its software and moneymaking services such as Search and YouTube on as many devices as possible. It also hopes to curry favor with independent developers, whose apps will work on more devices with fewer modifications.”

It won’t be wrong to assume that the idea of a hybrid operating system and a hybrid-PC is inspiring the Google CEO Sundar Pichai to move towards a more mobile-focused future. Google has also revealed a convertible laptop last month called the Pixel C and it seems like just the start.

Apple Makes Fun of Microsoft’s Windows Logo, Designs A New One

Apple has taken the liberty to make its own version of Windows logo and replaced the official Microsoft Windows logo with its own rendition on its website.

Apparently, Apple isn’t fond of the work of Windows designer team and it has decided to create its own version of Microsoft’s Windows logo.

If you visit the Apple’s support pages, you might notice something weird about the Windows OS logo. Apple’s rendition of Windows logo looks like a window- literally.

The logo is placed alongside the official logos of iOS 8, iCloud, and OS X Yosemite.

In the past, both companies have been making fun of each other via their product commercials. However, this feels odd as other recent developments indicated that things are getting better between these rivals.

Last year Redmond released the Office apps to iPads and a couple of weeks ago Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella used an iPhone onstage to demonstrate Microsoft apps.

Earlier, Apple invited a Microsoft executive onstage to show off Office apps on the new iPad Pro.
